I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

  1. And we’re back with another melt on another Friday. Pretty straightforward today As I melt down a heap of pewter pieces I found at an op shop over the last year as well as some subscriber sent scrap and other bits and pieces. Quite a few dollars in today’s melt which will add to the stacks value for sure. Definitely don’t forget to hit the 🔔 to be notified on next Friday’s melt as I get that big 1000LB motor melted down. Hopefully I’ll get at least 50LB of copper out of it but we will see. Have yourself an awesome weekend & until next time take care BSafe😁👋🏻

Silversmith here, you are pouring the silver to slow. When casting silver, a centrifuge or vacuum is usually used or if you don’t have those, pour very quickly in one fast motion with the torch still on it. 👍😊

Clear-coating the lead bar was a good idea, makes it much more safe to have around the house.

  12. Sterling is a bear to pour good bars from since the copper wants to crater up on the top. You can heat your graphite molds to red hot and it will flow a million times better and give you the quality bar you're after, but you only get a few bars out of a mold before it's done with

  13. Get the mold red hot… higher than melt temp….it’ll pour better. Aerosolised led will kill you in high enough doses over a period of time….

Cant you add borax as a flux. Either that or a good mold cleaning, add to the material.

  24. Just curious. I've never done anything melting or smelting or whatever it's called, but I have done concrete work that gave me an idea of (possibly) better turn outs. If you dont mind doing a [let's see if this works out] show.. try using a vibration contraption resting on the mold while pouring metal,, it just might help (like in concrete work) to get out air pockets and spread metal better to all corners.. 😇
