2026 has been a wild year for memory prices. A 32GB DDR5 kit that cost around $95 in mid-2025 was quoted near $400 by mid-2026. This tracks current $/GB pricing across laptop SO-DIMM, desktop UDIMM, and server ECC RDIMM memory, so you can see where the value actually is instead of guessing.
Why RAM Got This Expensive
This isn't a normal price swing. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have been shifting factory capacity away from ordinary consumer and server memory toward High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), the specialized, far more profitable memory used in AI accelerators. That deliberately cut the supply of everyday DDR4 and DDR5 right as demand stayed high, and prices responded accordingly: some segments have roughly doubled, others have gone up 4-5x since mid-2025.
DDR4 hasn't been spared either, even though it's the older standard. Manufacturers are winding down DDR4 production entirely rather than keeping it around as a cheap fallback, so existing stock is getting more valuable, not less. Server-grade ECC memory has been hit especially hard, since it competes for the same fabrication capacity as the enterprise AI hardware driving all of this.
One practical warning worth passing along: the price premium has drawn counterfeiters into the market, including fake DDR5 modules built from empty chips relabeled to look legitimate. Buy from reputable sellers, especially at these prices.

Is refurbished server RAM safe to buy?
Generally yes, from a reputable seller. Look for modules described as tested or load-tested rather than pulled and untested, and confirm a return policy. Refurbished DDR4 ECC memory is currently one of the best value segments in the entire memory market, often 40-70% cheaper than equivalent new memory.
Can I mix RDIMM and UDIMM or ECC and non-ECC memory?
No. RDIMM, LRDIMM, and UDIMM are electrically incompatible with each other, and ECC memory cannot be mixed with non-ECC memory in the same system. Always match the exact module type, generation, speed, and rank configuration specified for your particular motherboard or server.
How do I check what RAM is already in my system before buying more?
On Windows, run wmic memorychip get capacity,speed,manufacturer,partnumber from Command Prompt. On Linux, run sudo dmidecode --type 17. On macOS, use system_profiler SPMemoryDataType. Checking first avoids buying memory that's the wrong type or duplicating what you already have.
