Why DIY and Professional Pricing Look So Different

The panels themselves have never been the expensive part of a solar system. In a typical professionally installed system, the panels account for roughly 12% of the total price, call it $0.30-$0.40 of every installed watt. The rest is inverters and racking (about 21% combined), permitting and interconnection (8%), sales tax (2%), and installer soft costs: labor, sales and marketing, and overhead and profit, which together make up nearly half the total bill.

That's the whole DIY value proposition in one sentence: buying panels directly from a wholesale or off-grid retailer doesn't get you a secretly cheaper panel, it gets you the same commodity hardware installers already buy, minus everything installers charge for handling the labor, paperwork, and margin. The tradeoff is that you take on the mounting, wiring, code compliance, and (for grid-tied systems) the electrical inspection yourself.

One more thing worth knowing before comparing prices: the 30% federal residential solar tax credit (Section 25D) ended for customer-owned systems on January 1, 2026, cut nearly a decade early by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Every price on this page, and every professional-install figure below, is now effectively a full retail price with no federal credit attached, unless you specifically go the lease/PPA route covered in the FAQ.

Is DIY solar actually cheaper than a professional install?

Yes, substantially, but not because DIY panels are magically cheaper per watt. A professionally installed system averages roughly $2.60-$3.00 per watt in 2026, and the panels themselves are only about 12% of that, call it $0.35/watt. The other 88% is inverters, racking, wiring, permitting, sales and marketing, and installer overhead and profit. Buying the same panels yourself for $0.25-$0.70/watt and doing the labor yourself is where the real savings come from, not from finding some secret cheaper panel.

What's the difference between monofacial and bifacial panels?

Monofacial panels only generate power from their front face. Bifacial panels also capture light reflected off the ground or roof onto their back side, typically adding 5-20% more output depending on how reflective the mounting surface is and how the panel is elevated. Bifacial panels cost a bit more but have become the DIY-market default since the price gap has narrowed a lot in 2026.

Can I DIY a grid-tied solar system, or do I need a licensed electrician?

It depends on what you mean by DIY. You can buy and mount the panels yourself, but connecting to the grid for net metering almost always requires a licensed electrician's sign-off and a utility interconnection inspection, regardless of who did the physical installation. Off-grid systems (battery-based, no utility connection) have no such requirement and are where most true start-to-finish DIY builds happen.

Is the federal solar tax credit still available in 2026?

Not for homeowners who buy and own their panels outright. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed in July 2025, ended the 30% residential solar tax credit (Section 25D) for customer-owned systems nearly a decade ahead of its original schedule, dropping it to 0% on January 1, 2026 with no phase-down. Only systems installed and placed in service by December 31, 2025 could still claim it. Solar leases and power purchase agreements (PPAs) can still indirectly pass along savings from the separate commercial solar tax credit (Section 48E), which remains available to the system's owner for now.

What does "Grade B" mean on a solar panel listing?

Grade B (sometimes called Class B) panels are new, fully functional panels with a cosmetic defect, like a scratched frame, a minor scuff on the glass, or slightly discolored backsheet, that doesn't affect electrical performance or the manufacturer's power rating. They're common in the DIY liquidation market and are usually the cheapest per-watt option available, since retailers can't sell them as flawless new stock.
