Privacy Policy

Short version: sheley.org is a personal site run by me, Brandon Sheley, in Topeka, Kansas. It uses Google Analytics to see which pages get used, and it stores your email address only if you sign up for a price alert or the newsletter. I don't sell or share email addresses, I don't run ads, and the tracker links don't carry affiliate tags.

What the Site Collects

  • Analytics. Pages use Google Analytics 4, which records things like the pages you view, how you arrived, your device and browser type, and your approximate location. It also records a few actions on this site: clicking through to a listing (with the store's name), and signing up for a price alert or the newsletter. It doesn't record your email address.
  • Price alerts. If you set one up, the site stores your email address, which tracker it's for, your target price, whether you've confirmed it, and when. Apart from the one confirmation email, it emails you only after you confirm, and only when that price target is hit.
  • Newsletter. If you sign up, the site stores your email address, whether you've confirmed it, and when.
  • Abuse protection. To stop the signup forms from being spammed, the site keeps a count of recent attempts tied to a one-way hash of your IP address and of the email entered. The hash can't be turned back into the address.
  • Server logs. Like any web host, the server keeps standard access logs (IP address, page requested, browser) for operation and security.

Cookies and Local Storage

  • Google Analytics cookies (_ga and related) tell repeat visits apart.
  • newsletter_popup_seen is set for 365 days once the newsletter popup has been shown, so it doesn't appear again.
  • Theme preference (light or dark) is saved in your browser's local storage and never leaves your device.

Other Services Involved

  • Google: Analytics, the web fonts your browser loads from Google Fonts, and Gmail, which sends the alert and confirmation emails.
  • Stores and marketplaces: the price trackers link to listings on eBay, Amazon, Newegg and other sellers. Once you click through, that site's privacy policy applies. The trackers don't add affiliate tags to those links.
  • Price data sources: listing data comes from eBay's API and PricePerGig. Nothing about you is sent to them.

Your Choices

  • Unsubscribe with the link in any alert or newsletter email. That stops all email to that address right away.
  • Delete your data: unsubscribing keeps a record that the address opted out. If you'd rather have the address removed entirely, contact me and I'll delete it.
  • Analytics: you can block cookies in your browser or use Google's Analytics opt-out add-on. The site works the same either way.

What I Don't Do

I don't sell, rent or share email addresses, run advertising or ad tracking, or build profiles of visitors. This site isn't directed at children under 13.

Changes and Contact

If what the site collects changes, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change. Questions or deletion requests: contact me.
